I was thinking Google Earth seems to be a popular program among GPS users.

Thought I'd make a place for us to talk about it.

I haven't been using it very long myself, just occasionally open it up to look as geocache sites. Recently, I've been putting tracks on it from some ATV trips, and getting to see them in a good 3-d view.

Archer, I have used Google Earth for a few month now, but only to print out map of different places and just plan playing around with it. I hope to get down to Harlan Co. before long and do some riding on and off the park and try out the Camera and GPS.

Hello everyone. Can someone help me? I have a Garmin 72. I bought this unit to learn with and only got a 12 volt power cord with it. (no software). I have learned to save my tracks etc. on it and wanted to put these tracks on Google Earth. I downloaded the basic version of Earth on my computer and bought the USB cable for the GPS and cant seem to get the Gps to interact with the computer. I did notice there were two more versions of Google available for a subscription. Is this what I need or do I need some other software? Also are these better Earth programs any clearer than the basic? Thanks for any help you can give.

I have some tracks from Martins Fork Lake and Harlan overlook ride. Anyone know how to post them here for other folks to see on/in Google Earth? Did you get your issue figured out Ohio Explorer? Thanks

There are a couple ways I can think of to do this. One, is actually purchase the subscription of Google Earth, it is suppose to then be able to interact with the GPS. You may want to check and make sure that it is compatible with your GPS first before you spend money on it.

Other than that, you can find other programs for free on the net that will let you download the tracks from your GPS, and save them as a *.gpx file, that you can then open into Google Earth. I don't know of any good programs for that right off hand. A quick search on Google should actually turn up quite a few though.

I don't know the specifics of the Garmin 72..but if you have the proper cable to connect it to your PC...you might want to check out TopoFusion. TopoFusion has a trial version that can receive/send data to/frm various Garmin models,,,including USB ans Serial models. I'd definitely check out the TopoFusion before buying any paid Google service

PS...TopoFusion also has a really neat feature....you can view some TerraServer detailed maps....if you see anything on the map, you cann easily 'draw' out a trail, give it a name, and then upload it as tracks back to your Garmin unit...I did this with 3 trails recently...and found 2 of the trails to be actual trails but the third one wasn't a trail.....still fun to play with.

downloaded that topofusion...played around with it 15 minutes...and bought it...seems like a great program, cant wait to get the full pro version in the mail!!

So, I take it that you found your GPS that day we had the group ride? Yes, I usually take the GPS with me even if I've know my way throughthe area. I'll frequently record the ride's tracks and send them out as a Goolge Earth .kmz file to the other people that rode with me....they like being able to show friends/family where they rode.

yep, rode back and it was laying right there near where i wrecked. scratched up the face a little but otherwise unhurt.
