I have never hunted on a WMA before. I have a friend who lives next to one and we were planning to try our luck there turkey hunting. My question is do you have to have a hunter saftey card to turkey hunt on a WMA? I know you have to have one for deer quota hunts but didn't know about turkey hunting. I have allways hunted private land and was born before 1975 so I don't have a safety card. Thanks for any info. ALSO I SEEN 5 TOMS IN FULL STRUT LAST WEDNESDAY. It's allmost time boys and girls. :D :D :D :D

I really couldn't give the correct answer to your question ,..but I will try to look up the information.

I got mine when Matt was small and doing his training,..so I took to the course also.

I am not sure but I do not think there are any different rules for WMAs. If you were born before 1975, you shouldn't need one.

Hey miller,..since you have to have the card during deer season,.. I believe I would call or email and ask the dept. I would mention the WMA by name in the call/email just to make sure.

You can email them from this page:

Let me start by saying, you should absolutely call them to make sure.

That being said, I have looked through the hunting guide and the only thing in there anywhere about hunter ed is the age requirement. There is nothing in the WMA section and I can't find anything on the deer quota hunts that says it's required.
I have been on two deer quota hunts and have never been asked for it.

The exception to that is a quota hunt that is not run by the wildlife department such as on a military base. I think that the time I hunted on the army depot in Madison county, I did have to have it.

Like I said, check with them but I don't think you need it.
IT is a simple class and actually fun if you can take it with someone.
You can do all but the shooting part online which makes it a one day class pretty much.

I have hunted other states that required it no matter what your age.

Thanks for the replies. I have a son that is 7 so I will probably take the course with him when he has to take it. Like I said before I have never hunted on a WMA so I don't know all the regulations.I have plenty of places to hunt on private land but hey since we are paying for it why not hunt it.Thanks for the help.Good luck this spring and be safe

Talked to a game warden the other day and he said that you didn't have to have the hunter saftey card to turkey hunt on WMA's. Just in case any one else wanted to know.
