hey guys i bought a magellan explortist 210 yesterday.
i was able to use to first day, and tracked some of my ride.
trouble is i cant figure out how to transfer these tracks to my pc.
also cant figure out how to load maps onto my GPS...that show towns, roads, ect.

it came with 2 cds of software, the explortist software which lodas fine. then i got some software called MapSend that i believe is for loading maps on the reciever but when i put the cd in the cd rom theres nothing on it, period. its a blank cd. guess this just may be a factory defect or something...ive got to figure out a way to get the software.

when i try to save my POI's and routes to the PC also, it saves them in a file format my PC can't recognize. granted my PC is a couple years old but i still think it should open these files.

any ideas?

I got a free program off the net called "easy GPS" it does pretty much everything for ya. Easy to use.

I've owned the paid version of that program, ExpertGPS, for several years and it meets all of my waypoint, route, and track management needs and then some. Just recently they added in the ability to geocode photos too, so as long as you keep your GPS clock in sync with your camera clock, you can see right where you were when you took that beautiful picture from that scenic overlook!

figured a few things out...

one, the reason the CD with maps wasnt working is because it was a DVD rom which my PC doesnt have. but I took it to a buddies house and it didnt even have any maps on it, just links to buy them.

second, the base map that came on my explorist 210 is a map of europe! howd that happen i wonder? like when I started it up the first time all the cities that came up were european cities. wonder what i can do to rememdy this? i need some sort of map on my GPS of roads and whatnot, sam did you see that software you got was free? if so where did you get it and is it easy to upload?

I have the bought version of expert gps as well. I think it is around $60 one time fee for the version I have. I recently bought the Topo 2008 for my Garmin (60CSX). The coolest thing about Expert GPS is that you can up-load your tracks and saved waypoints, and get a TOPO or Photo image of where you were at. The Expert GPS type of software also allows you to share your tracks with others via GPX files. All these software programs seem difficult when you are just getting started with these type of things, even the terminology is hard to understand, but you will see it is not that bad. I will say this, I own other brands of GPS devices, and in my opinion none are as easy to operate as Garmin. I am not saying they are the best, just that they are really user friendly, with great factory support, and tons of software, and accesories available. I would get the free trial of the easy GPS just to get started on uploading some of your tracks to your computer. After you get a feel for your device and sharing information, then start looking into some maps for your 210. The only answer to your situation is what you already know, you will end up with both maps on your handheld, and Expert GPS. You gotta love it something else to spend money on. http://www.easygps.com/

well i contacted magellan and told them i had mistakingly got the european model of the 210 (even though the only way to tell is to turn the device on and check the basemap - there is no indication on the box or anywhere else)...they told me there was nothing they could do and i would have to purchase a new map for like 70 bucks.

so i took it back to walmart and got the right one with the north american base map. and i was able to transfers my POI's and one of my routes from my tackett creek ride to my new one.

thank goodness for walmart.

one question....some of the roads on it I can barely see, like the contrast is turned down....and others stand out easily. is this because i need to buy a new map with the smaller roads on it i suppose?
