I've always had some interest in learning to fly fish. Even though I said in another post that I'd rather wait until I was in a little better shape to try fly fishing/wading. I'd still like to be learning about how to do it.
Last night I even had a dream about it. It was in that dream that I realized I had the perfect place to learn to cast up here. I have a huge open yard, any my next door neighbor inlaws have a huge neighboring yard.
So I was thinking when I woke up that I could maybe find a cheap fly fishing set somewhere, get one at a yard sale, or borrow one from a friend, and learn how to use one up here in my yard.
I've never lived anywhere with a big yard before, so it never really dawned on me until that dream, that I could use the one I have now to learn to do these things in.
I was wondering tho, if there are any good resources on the net that show how to learn to cast a fly fishing set up. Like you tube videos or something. I'm more of a visual learner, just reading something doesn't always do it. I get a good idea reading, but not as much as if I see if happening.
I suppose there is a lot of other stuff to learn with it as well, like tying the leader to the fly line.
And all the terminology that goes with fly fishing.

Sticker shock got me today. I remember looking at some fly rod/reel combos a few years ago. My how things have changed. Looks like I'll probably be looking at the flea market, yard sales, or for a loaner. I have been saving up for a new GPS unit, I may break into that fund and get me a fly rod/reel combo. I've kinda lost interest in the GPS. My wife has her old one, and it works. So maybe a fly fishing set up would be a better buy. There are so many options though, I wouldn't know what to buy anyway. To those prices again.

To those prices again. Hey listen everyone goes through that ,but if you look at a basspro catalog you'll get the same sticker shock. Most of that is BS in my opinion. I had fly fished with a $40 outfit for 10 years and did fine. Yes there is a difference in a $40 outfit and say a $300 outfit. But to learn on a cheaper outfit will do and let you decide if that is the sport for you . I have a outfit that I would be glad to let you use to learn on, until you can get one of your own. Also I would be glad to teach you what I know, I am a visual learner myself. There is a lot of info out there but most is overkill and a bunch of snobs that think you have to be rich to enjoy the sport(which is nonsense). Flyfishing is just a cheap as spincasting or any other form of fishing. Also you can buy a pair of hipwaders at magic mart for $25 thats all you need in the local rivers. the casting looks hard but ask countryboy it isn't near as hard as it looks. I will if you are interested post some sites the will give you some practical info on flyfishing that will not overwhelm you. But if you are like me you can learn a whole lot better if someone is there to show you the correct way to cast. Let me know if your interested and we can get together and give it a try.

Its no big deal,,,the first one I bought was from Majic Mart, and when I fished with it I had a great time,..simply because I was with friends who enjoyed being out waste deep in water on the "North Fork of the Kentucky River". When I get a chance to come that way and fish,..hopefully you will be able to go Archer,...like Fisher,..I have extra rod & reel that I will bring

Magic Mart is probably the one place in Hazard I didn't look yesterday. Our Hazard Magic Mart isn't exactly ate up with Fishing supplies though, so I kind of figured that if no where else had a fly fishing set up, they wouldn't either. I'm probably wrong though, they probably have all kinds.
Now, when it warms up, and everyone is going fishing, I may have to take you up on an offer to borrow a fly fishing pole. I just don't think I'll be able to afford one. Bills are eating me alive anymore. I can't get ahead for nothing right now. I honestly don't know where it all goes either. It just blows my mind I tell ya.

Hey man I know how that is I've been in a bind more than once in my life(It's no fun). If you want to go just shoot me a pm or call me and we will head out (you don't have to worry about money, I'm going anyway) I would be glad to just have the company and turn someone on to flyfishing. I'll shoot you a PM and give you my phone #.
