Hey guys, what's up? I just joined your site. I'm from PA but lived in KY for a while (Ft. Knox) I just like to see how the hunting is around the places I used to live, I am also a member of a forum in GA and PA. We have about 16"-20" of snow on the ground right now where I live and it is heck on the turkeys and deer, though I'm sure everything else as well. The club I belong to tries to get some corn out in the woods for the critters in the winter, and so do individual people, lets hope it helps.

Welcome aboard pres Snow hasn't been that bad here this year, we only have about 3" inch's on the ground at present. She has been cold the last week or so. I was thinking about those long beards the other day, snow clinging to them possibly breaking them off. So far I think our turkey's will be ok, on average the snow's we have gotten only last 3-7 days before melting off. Today we hit around 35 degrees melting most of the snow on the ground. Tomorrow should be close to 45. Hopefully some of the warmer temps will reach up into your neighborhood melting some of that snow for you guys. I'm sure the turkey & deer need the break up there right about now. Sightings here of the young poults last summer, the hatch seem to be good in the eastern part of the state. Looking at the count down clock at the top of this page, its only 86 days until the general season opens here in Ky. I can't hardly wait

Yeah, they do need the break along with the snow that has been on the ground for weeks, we haven't had temps. above freezing for over a week. We had a few day stretch of single didgets and below 0. But, we have resiliant critters up here, but the weather can take its toll on the heard and flocks. We are supposed to get some 30's at the end of the week. One good thing about it is the lakes and ponds were froze over and now have alot of snow on them, so when it all melts the water levels will get some much needed help.

Man we are having a heat wave today, right now we are all the way up to 24 degrees. One good thing about these winter days it gives me a chance to make a few call's in preparation for the spring season. I also during the winter months break down my guns and give them a good cleaning. So being snowed in can be a good thing, giving a person the time to do things that he would otherwise put off. Hey whats your favorite type of T-Call ?? pot, mouth, box ????

Yeah, I know what you mean, I've been dusting off the calls too, I'm going to a NWTF banquet this sat. maybe I'll win a gun. It actually got up to 33 today around 1:00pm I was sweating my but off, lol. My favorite call is a slate, I use a Quaker Boy tripple threat but only use the slate part, and you have to use a purple hart striker, sweetest sound ever, I once called a long beard across a hollow and trough a cat-tail swamp with it.

I know what you mean about a slate. I made the one below a week or so. Its a 3 1/2" slate with a 3" glass sound board. It was made from some wormy ash in which I filled the holes with fine walnut saw dust & titebond lll mixture. Doing so help in keeping the pot from breaking apart while I turned it. I've made a few calls & bought a few, I guess my favorite is a little 3" glass walnut I turned. Good luck at the banquet !!

Yes,
I haven't been carrying a slate for the last few seasons and thought I'd make one to put in my vest. Sometimes having just a slight difference pitch in calling(sound) makes a big difference in successful hunt or not. I hope to make a trumpet in a few days. I've never used one, really never seen one in person. I been reading/looking at photos on the internet and thought I would try my hand at turning one.

Ice this morning, then rain all day here. I have mid March & Apirl, May on my mind too. I'm looking at some Holly laying here just waiting for it to get warm enough out in the garage to make/turn a few T-Calls

Or at least a propane fireplace!

I'm sure glad it helped in winning the gun. "If It did ?????".. Congratulations, that gun will be a keeper Man the northern half of Ky. got hit bad by the ice storm. The way it looks on TV, Wolfe Co. doesn't have a tree left standing. The other snow you are expecting is suppose to hit here sometimes around Monday.
